As we approach the 75th anniversary of our country's independence day on August 15, we are called to celebrate this grand historical event by wearing our patriotism and nationalism on our sleeve. In short it means showcasing our love and dedication for our country with a public display of nationalistic spirit and pride by hoisting the tricolour (tiranga) on roof tops and in our homes. As part of the celebrations of 'Azadi ka Amrut Mahotsav' it was encouraging to see some of our religious places in the state lit up with the colours of the tiranga , even as the pride of place and honour goes to the 17th century church of St Francis of Assisi in the Old Goa heritage site for being one of the 100 monuments in the country to be chosen to be illuminated for the event. While these are only externals meant to foster and shore up nationalistic fervour, there is also a need to remember and honour our past leaders and freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives to free us from colonial rule. Let us also pledge to work as one large family for the welfare and prosperity of our of country.
