When bad road design becomes a killer

Accidents caused by over speeding and vehicles hitting dividers on highways have become common. The recent accident on the Bambolim highway that claimed the lives of two well-known sportspersons has shocked Goa. Speeding on highways is not being properly monitored by the authorities.

Experts should first check whether the speed limits on Goan highways are set according to the safety of the road design. Simply announcing speed limits without proper signboards and with poorly designed roads only puts more lives at risk. A quick solution would be to install higher dividers to prevent vehicles from crossing into opposite lanes.

Goa is now close to being among the states with the highest number of road accidents. Soon, we may end up remembering such victims on World Remembrance Day for Road Traffic Victims. Is this what the government and transport officials want people to do? Such accidents are the result of poor planning and negligence.

An MLA had once proposed a world-class Formula One-style race track in his constituency ” perhaps those engineers could now help our PWD contractors design safer roads that allow speed only where it is safe.
