After every assembly election there are the usual noises of EVMs being tampered with by the losing candidates and they rush to the Election Commission with petitions for cancellation of votes in certain booths and repolling; a lot of time, money and energy is wasted in such pursuits. There are even allegations of these machines being remotely hacked and malprogrammed to register votes only for the ruling party irrespective of the button being pressed. Authorities have to take recourse to the cumbersome VVPAT process to verify whether the EVMs have been gamed or not. Why don't we simply revert to the old system of stamping on paper ballots which was simpler, non-controversial and acceptable to all.
