A 76-year-old retired teacher on her morning walk was killed after a pack of stray dogs attacked her inside the Air Force Station's residential camp at Jalahalli East in Bengaluru on Wednesday. A 7-year-old boy was mauled and killed by a pitbull dog in Anjuna recently. There have been many such cases where dogs have been attacking children and elders across India. There needs to be a policy change in managing the threat of stray dogs to the human population and that is we should simply kill them. The sterilisation programme for the existing stray dogs is just not working since the personnel deployed for such work are hardly able to catch a sufficient number of dogs. It is time that we expedite this measure and make it a law, if possible, that ferocious dogs breeds cannot be kept as pets. Like in foreign countries you rarely see stray dogs, in fact there are none in countries like Singapore, and pets are managed properly when they are brought out to public places. We should follow these practices of good pet management and zero tolerance for stray dogs in India also.
