Despite crores of rupees spent on roads, bridges, and highways in Goa, neither Goans nor tourists have benefitted from good quality roads. The situation on the ground is alarming. Dangerous speed breakers without proper white markings or signboards have resulted in fatal accidents and severe injuries. The careless attitude of the Public Works Department (PWD) has made roads unsafe for everyone. Water pipelines installed in the middle of roads frequently leak, causing repeated road digging and repairs. Construction work on the railway flyover bridge at San Jose de Areal is progressing very slowly. Similarly, the Porvorim flyover was built without proper study, and the Dabolim airport road flyover is also delayed. Citizens continue to suffer from poor road conditions year-round, with no smooth journeys despite paying taxes.Why does the PWD engineering team consistently fail to deliver quality roads? Where is the accountability for the wastage of taxpayers’ money? These questions need to be addressed by the government immediately. On another note, the free gas cylinder scheme is being availed by everyone, including government servants and outsiders. This raises concerns about the fair distribution of benefits intended for the needy.
