More than 95,000 government schools have been shut down in recent years, all in the name of rationalisation due to falling enrollments. The question is, what did the government do to stop this ? Why did it allow the private sector to gain dominance? The answers are clear and evident. Lack of teachers, lack of proper infrastructure, the love for promoting local language medium schools while parents want English medium schools, the assignment of government teachers to do government work like Census, SIR, etc and the lack of toilets are some of the major reasons for decline of government schools. These are all systemic issues that can and should have been addressed. We don't need a 'School-Theek-Karo' campaign, we need a 'Government-Theek-Karo' movement. Any state government that does not prioritize English medium schools should be brought to book. The politicians send their own children to the best English medium schools and abroad for higher studies while advocating local language schools in their political quest for being seen as the saviour of local languages. They need to be named and shamed for this duplicitous approach.
