Ensure proper fire safety measures at markets

The devastating fire that broke out at the Sunday market around 10.30 pm on Wednesday, after the shops had closed, gutted nearly 150 small cloth shops, causing losses worth crores of rupees. The incident is a wake-up call for traders and authorities to ensure proper fire safety measures, particularly in old buildings and sheds with ageing electrical wiring. Many traders had stocked up on new dress materials for the upcoming Diwali festival, making the loss particularly painful. Fire brigades from neighbouring areas worked to bring the blaze under control. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported. A similar incident at a car accessories shop at Tilak Maidan also highlights the need for vigilance. Municipal authorities must ensure that fire extinguishers and other safety equipment are readily available in commercial establishments. The shifting of Vasco fire station from the KTC bus stand to Dabolim also raises questions about emergency response time. The Chief Minister and local MLAs have assured compensation. We hope affected traders recover and rebuild their businesses.
