Football needs development at the grassroots

Valanka Alemao’s election as Goa Football Association (GFA) President marks a turning point for Indian sports amid Goan football’s gradual decline. In 2025, she became the first Indian woman appointed to the FIFA Women’s Football Development Committee, gaining global recognition for bridging grassroots football with international standards. As CEO of Churchill Brothers FC and Chairperson of the AIFF Women’s Committee, Alemao brings years of experience in nurturing talent, managing high-profile clubs and promoting women’s football. Her leadership offers hope for addressing the GFA’s challenges through strategic vision, financial stability and improved player development. To honour the community’s support that secured her election, she must prioritise grassroots football, strengthen youth academies, improve infrastructure and create sustainable pathways for young Goan talent. With her at the helm, Goan football has the potential to revive and flourish.
