Valanka Alemao’s election as president of the Goa Football Association (GFA) marks a historic moment in the State’s football administration, making her the first woman to hold the prestigious position. Her elevation presents an opportunity to bring fresh ideas, improve governance and strengthen a sport deeply rooted in Goa’s cultural identity. Goa has a rich footballing tradition, passionate supporters and an abundance of talent. However, the State’s football administration faces the challenge of reviving the game, strengthening grassroots development and creating a clear pathway for young players to reach the national level.
Equally important is the need to improve domestic competitions and provide Goan footballers with greater opportunities to progress to national and professional leagues. Women’s football also deserves greater attention, with increased investment in coaching, infrastructure and competitive tournaments to encourage more girls to take up the sport. Valanka must demonstrate that her leadership represents not merely a change of guard, but the beginning of a new chapter for Goan football. Following in the footsteps of her father, Churchill Alemao, founder of Churchill Brothers Football Club and a passionate football enthusiast, she must take decisive steps to restore Goa’s footballing glory.
