The 161-day protest by residents of Karapur Sarvan against the proposed Abhinandan Lodha project has reportedly been temporarily suspended following the issuance of a “stop-work” notice by the village panchayat. The suspension, however, does not mark the end of the villagers’ struggle. Residents have made it clear that legal proceedings will continue and that their demand remains unchanged until the project is completely scrapped. The protest is being regarded as the longest continuous agitation of its kind in Goa. It was led largely by the women of Karapur Sarvan, whose determination, courage and sustained presence on the streets became the defining feature of the movement. Day after day, they stood together to defend their village, its land, its environment and their community’s right to determine its own future. The temporary suspension has come as a welcome relief, particularly for the women who can now celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi with their families. After months of protest and uncertainty, this opportunity to return home and observe the festival peacefully is being seen by many as a result of divine intervention.
Nevertheless, their relief is accompanied by vigilance. The residents know that the struggle is not over. The women of Karapur Sarvan have demonstrated extraordinary resolve. Their movement has shown that ordinary citizens can challenge powerful interests when they remain united and committed to protecting their homes and livelihoods. Their protest has also drawn attention to the concerns of villages across Goa where large, unwanted projects are being proposed. The villagers have warned that they will return to the streets if the project is not permanently withdrawn. Their message is clear. Development cannot be imposed by disregarding local communities, environmental concerns and democratic consent. The Karapur Sarvan movement stands as an inspiring lesson for other villages. It proves that unity, perseverance and collective action can make people’s victory possible even in the face of formidable opposition.
