The accused involved in the assault of journalist Sameep Narvekar near Baga Beach should face strict and lawful action. Such incidents cannot be taken lightly, as attacks on journalists can also threaten the safety of ordinary citizens. Calangute Police have reportedly arrested and taken into custody a tout accused of assaulting the journalist. The incident occurred when Narvekar allegedly intervened to protect tourists from illegal touts and began recording the incident. The police action is welcome, but the matter should be pursued strictly according to law. Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte has condemned the attack, while the Tourism Department has reportedly written to the Goa Police seeking strict measures against the tout menace and greater safety in coastal tourist areas. Journalists often face intimidation while carrying out their responsibilities, particularly when exposing illegal activities. Some may tolerate such behaviour to prevent matters from escalating, but that should not become an excuse for attacks to go unchecked. Journalists play an important role in exposing wrongdoing. Strong and lawful action in this case would send a clear message that harassment and violence against journalists and the public will not be tolerated.
