The world of cinema is yet again witnessing a battle between giant filmmaking studios, and it’s going to be a feast for the movie-goers. Marvel, DC and Disney e have been in constant competition with each other to deliver movies with great storytelling, epic music, and subtle commentary on key social issues and human nature. True, Disney owns Marvel, but the competition between Disney studios and Marvel is very real. While Marvel wowed its fans with the whole Avengers story arc, DC saw its ‘Dark Knight’ film series become hugely popular. On the other hand, Disney delivered beautiful animated stories such as Frozen. But later, Marvel took a lead in the race, and DIsney and DC had to play catch-up. On that note, while everyone out there is busy talking about Marvel’s ‘Endgame’, here’s a quick look at what its competitors are up to.
Starting with Disney, the brand seems to be dishing out remakes of its old films rather than making any new ones. Recently, we had Mary Poppins, which was quite successful, and this perhaps prompted Disney to recycle more of its old movies. The company has now released an action film version of Dumbo, with ‘Lion King’ also in the pipeline. Right now however, Disney is heavily marketing the live action version of one of its greatest hits:Aladdin.
Disney is banking heavily on the character of Genie played by Will Smith, and it is subtly trying to make the audience emotional about the fact that Robin Williams played Genie in the old animated version of the film. The live-action film is clearly set to be compared with its animated counterpart, and that could be dangerous for the film.
DC on the other hand is quietly revamping is storytelling style to take on Marvel. DC films such as Dark Knight, Suicide Squad etc have been popular because of their dark storytelling style which offers a raw take on human nature and society. However, with films such as Wonder Woman, Justice League, and Aquaman, DC has tried to play with comic timing in a way similar to that of Marvel, and the same is also reflected in its latest film Shazam. Unfortunately, Shazam, which is currently in theatres, is being overshadowed by the sheer noise of marketing for Avengers Endgame. However, this is no reason to underestimate DC, because it is working on something far bigger: an individual film on one of its greatest villains: Joker. The film’s teaser is already out on Youtube, and the movie is set to release on October 4 this year. By that time, the excitement generated by Avengers should have died down, giving DC a decisive advantage
