On the occasion of National Science Day, the Science Association and the departments of the Science Faculty of Dnyanprassarak Mandals’s College and Research Centre, Assagao in association with department of Science and Technology, Govt of Goa, organized ‘Science Expo 2019’ recently. The departments of Chemistry, Physics, Electronics, Computer Science, Mathematics and Computer Applications had exhibits of projects and demonstration by the students and the library also had a display of books related to science on this occasion. The expo was visited by students of High Schools and Higher Secondary Schools from all over the state. Students visited the science laboratories and viewed demonstrations of experiments, project presentations, poster presentations, screening of short films etc. The inaugural function was graced by former chief scientist and scientist-in-charge, Dr Anil K Chaubey from the National Institute of Oceanography, regional centre, Mumbai. He has to his credit, the title of being the first Indian Scientist to dive into the Indian Ocean for the purpose of research. At the onset, the principal Dr D B Arolkar addressed the gathering. He mentioned that the objective of such an exhibition was to expose the students to recent discoveries in Science and also to provide an opportunity to explore new avenues by stimulating their curiosity and inquisitive instinct.
In his keynote address, Dr Chaubey mentioned that the celebration of the ‘National Science Day’ is to commemorate one of the greatest physicists, Sir CV Raman and his contributions to science. Dr. Chaubey shared his strong belief about Science and Technology being the backbone of any country. He stated that the theme of this year’s Science Day is ‘Science for the people and people for Science’. He urged the young scientists, students to undertake research that is useful for the society. He spoke about basic and applied science and how science should reach from the laboratory to the field i.e. it must reach the public in order to be truly useful.
As examples of research that could be undertaken by students, he described about the fecal bacterial problem in beach waters and Nano plastics which are causing severe health and environmental hazards. He also congratulated the college for its accreditation which stands as proof for the quality of education being imparted to its pupils and said that faculty members should involve themselves in continuing education through national and international workshops. This was followed by a lecture on Ocean Science-Deep Sea Exploration by Dr Chaubey where heelaborated on ocianic research.
