Goa Livelihoods Forum (GLF) will be releasing A White Paper on Livelihoods- Goa, 23rd March 2019. On this occasion GLF will be organizing a symposium on “Livelihood and Climate Change”. The symposium is driven by Think Hatchery, the reputed knowledge forum promoted by GLF. The program is scheduled from 10 am to 1 am at Black Box, Kala Academy, Panaji.
The White Paper & the discussions are expected to help examine and debate the salient features around climate change, livelihoods and sustainable development in Goa. It will contribute to the state narrative by systematically analyzing the relationship between economic growth and climate change in Goa. It is more relevant now because of the unforeseen situations arising with the major changes in major sectors contributing to the state economy. It will further the discourse about livelihoods and sustainability, by linking alternative approaches to climate change. This includes adaptation based on vulnerability reduction and livelihoods concerns and processes with the emergence of climatic changes.
The White Paper Report is based on the data collated from a household survey conducted across 12 talukas by GLF among a cross section of 3000 adults aged 18 and over. The symposium will take-off with the Official Release of the White Paper on Livelihoods followed by a panel discussion by Raju Nayak, eminent Journalist, and Soumya Dutta, Convenor- Beyond Copenhagen Collective, MAUSAM. They intend to discuss and explore practical solutions to the Livelihoods challenges in consonance with the global discussion on climate change. The discussion will be moderated by Mr. Prakash Kamat, Senior Journalist. The symposium will be attended by intellectuals, senior officials, policy makers, and representative from media, stakeholders from NGOs, and civil society organizations, sector experts, professionals, representatives from business.
Speaking about the White Paper on Goa livelihoods and the need to organize deliberation on Livelihoods and Climate Change, “The effort is to reach out to households, social groups, communities all across the state, spend time with them, undertake a mix of qualitative and quantitative research and prepare an in-depth, authoritative report. This White Paper is more of a guide which is aimed at informing readers, concisely about the complex issue of livelihoods, income, sources of income and quality of life, in the backdrop of Goa experiencing a big change in the economics of dominant sectors “ mining, tourism and hospitality and others” said Charudutta Panigrahi, Mentor, GLF.
