Self-taught artist Rumi Ray's paintings in oil and water colours adorn the exhibition organised by the Goa chapter of the Indian Medical Association on the occasion of World Kidney Day.
The painting exhibition titled "A Ray of Hope" will see a host of creative works of Ray and whose sale, will help in raising funds for Rumi's dialysis.
Rumi Ray was spotted as an artist by Pheroza Godrej of Cymroza Art Gallery, but she had no formal training in art then. Rumi was once a marketing executive and even a journalist. A corporate marketing executive with Tata Consultancy Services, she gave up a lucrative consultancy practice to follow her heart and become a full-time professional painter in 1997. Cymroza Art Gallery was the first to recognise her talent. Rumi held her first exhibition at ANZ Grindlay's Bank in 1998. Critics, collectors and the press loved her work. She has never looked back since then. After getting the first break as an artist, she went on to hold exhibitions across India and Israel.
Rumi’s paintings have been patronised by the Prime Minister’s Residence, Air India, American Consulate (Mumbai), Camlin Industries Limited, Goadfrey Phillips, Mahindra & Mahindra, the National Centre for the Performing Arts, Bombay House (Tata Sons), Merrill Lynch, Datla Industries Limited, Mark Peterson (USA) and Yaron Mayer (Israel).
Today, Rumi faces the biggest challenge of her life. Having suffered severe kidney failure, she needs dialysis on a regular basis but she is in a financial crisis owing to health issues.
