You’ve read the story and watched the film adaptation about a girl who stumbles down a hole and ends up in a different wonderland of sorts where she meets characters like the Chesire Cat. The Mad Hatter and the White Rabbit. Now, it’s time to look at Alice through the eyes of Czech film maker Jan Svankmajer, one of the foremost animators in the world. Inspired by Lewis Carroll’s tale, Å vankmajer, decided to give his own spin to the story by combining a live-action Alice (Kristyna Kohoutova) with a stop-motion Wonderland filled with threatening and bizarre characters in his first full length feature film Alice. The film which was released in 1988 received crtical acclaim and is often recommended as a must watch film.The film brilliantly marries a sly visual wit with piercing psychological insight. It is a “surrealist dream universe as created by one of the few true masters of contemporary animation.” Although the film more or less sticks to the original storyline, the addition of animation creates some opften creepy creatures.
Continuing with his exploration of Surrealism, art historian Apurva Kulkarni will screen the masterpiece Alice on May 18, 6.30 pm at Reise Magos Fort as part of The Bigger Picture initiative.
