After a repeated history of outbreaks of various types of viruses in the past, it’s coronavirus this time. In 2002-03 it was SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) in mainland China when 349 people had died. The number of deaths was less compared to the current virus 2019-nCoV (Coronavirus) that was first reported from Wuhan, China on December 31 in 2019.
There is shortage of testing kits in China and other countries, including India and hence the detection of the virus becomes difficult in the early stage, with 14-day incubation period, the best solution to keep the virus from being spread to wider population is to quarantine those who have visited or traveled to China in December 2019.
As death toll rises in China nearing 500 mark, US president Donald Trump has pledged to work with China on the outbreak. Cruise ships in Japan and Hong Kong are being scrutinized amid infection fears.Health experts say the death toll is likely to rise because of the large number of infections. The mortality rate of the coronavirus, about 2 percent so far, appears to be far lower than SARS, which had a mortality rate of about 10 per cent.
The rise and spread of Coronavirus has become a pressing health issue around the world, and it also echoed recently in the Goan Legislative Assembly. Legislators stated that the Indian state of Kerala has been witnessing cases of Coronavirus, and considering the high number of tourists from Keral visiting Goa, the state should take measures to prevent the spread of the virus here.
