Justin Bieber edged Lady Gaga out to become the artist who took home the most awards at the MTV European Music Awards 2016 which was held at Netherlands on November 6. Bieber who nominated in five categories walked away with three awards for - "Best Canadian Act", "Best Song" for "Sorry" and "Biggest (Most) Fans" which was all thanks to his big fan base as the award was a result on online voting done before the start of the show.

He was followed closely by Gaga who is presently on tour in Japan and walked away with two awards for Best Female and Best Look. Dance group DNCE and Dutch DJ Martin Garrix also took home two awards each. However Beyonce who was also nominated in five categories did not win anything this time around.

The show was hosted by Bebe Rexha and MTV's Lore saw punk band Green Day being presented with the Global Icon award in recognition of life achievement. The band also took to the stage to perform where they took a jibe at Trump with their song American Idiot, which was just two days before the presidential elections. Green Day frontman Billi JoeArmstrong also seemed to make the intention clear when accepting the award as he stated "Most of all, it's nice to be out of America just for a second, because of this horrendous election that's going on right now," he said. "Our entire country is about to have one big, collective heart attack."

Canadian star Shawn Mendes was another at the event. He won in the "Best Male" category and also did a piano rendition of his ballad "Mercy" which he dedicated to his mother who was celebrating her birthday that day.

Rexha, who went through 15 different outfits during the evening, also performed the live debut of her single, "I've Got U". Honored as "Best New Act," Swedish teen Zara Larsson performed a medley of her biggest hits, "Lush Life" and "Ain’t My Fault.

In a poignant display of respect, the trophies this year were all painted purple in the memory of iconic singer Prince.
