The manner of Welbeck's goals demanded proper celebration; his first was a smart chip, his second a dink through the keeper's legs after doing well to bring down Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's incisive long pass. The Arsenal striker's electric return in front of goal is an added bonus for Gunners fans just glad to see him up and running after a torrid sequence of injuries.
During the game and even after, the internet went crazy over Welbeck but not for the goals. Instead, they applauded his ‘keeping up with the times’ saltbae celebration. The hashtag #saltbae came about when Turkish chef Nusret Gokce, posted a video of him sprinkling salt onto a steak in an overly flamboyant manner on Instagram. The video went viral and the term saltbae was created. Now Danny Welbeck ‘paid tribute’ to the chef and the trend with his goal celebration. Across the internet, people laughed and tweeted funny things about the celebration. Danny Welbeck too got into the act after the game.
After the dab dance spread like wildfire through the Premier League last season, it remains to be seen whether any other star players take up the 'Salt Bae' with equal gusto. There’ll definitely be a few players, not just in England but elsewhere too, who will take this up. It’s going to be fun to watch.
