When it comes to figuring out a style for yourself, you first have to figure out what you like, who you admire, and what you feel comfortable in and with. Style is nothing if you can’t carry it off, and if you’re uncomfortable in a pair of tight jeans, for instance, you won’t carry it off no matter how great it looks or how fashionable it is.
1. Pick your colours
Colours that you like are one thing, and colours that look good on you are another. It’s not often that both these two ideals meet. So, you need to figure out both. Start by analyzing what colours go with your eyes, which colours hold that V shape of your body well, or if you don’t have that body shape, which colours mask the paunch better.
Ask your parents and the girlfriend, though do remember that they will not always be 100% honest. Ask a buddy. He might tell you the truth. Don’t be disappointed if that tee you like is in a colour that doesn’t suit you. There are still ways for you to wear it and carry it well.
2. Pick a style
Are you the debonair you think you are? Can you carry a pair of sneakers off that snazzy gray suit you bought? It’s great to stay abreast of what’s in and hot, but do remember to check out how you look first before entering the club on Saturday night. If you like wearing almost body hugging tees and shirts, spend a lot of time getting your body in shape for that style. Don’t put on a tight football shirt when you’re 15 kilos overweight. You’ll be doing more damage than good. Also, don’t wear a really snazzy shirt over a pair of torn jeans. Your top and bottom halves need to match.
3. Separate work wear from evening wear
Most guys have similar styles at work and in the evening. While it’s good for many, it’s not always the best option. You can have the same pair of jeans but team it with a formal shirt tucked in for work and a casual tee or shirt left out when you head out for a drink with friends. Your shoes make a big difference. A more casual and colourful pair in the evening will certainly get you noticed.
4. Wear the right footwear
Nothing says class more than a great pair of shoes. Every fashionable man worth his salt needs to have a classy pair of dress shoes, either black or brown, depending on what colour trousers you prefer. Ensure that it’s clean and shining. Those five minutes that you take to polish your shoes before heading out can make all the difference. For work, go for leather if you like it. A great pair of slip-ons, or boots, depending on what you wear, are perfect. For the evening, a nice pair of moccasins, or a great pair of casual shoes work wonders.
5. Dress older
If you really want to make an impression, dress like you’re a few years older than you are. We’re not saying you need to wear your father’s clothes, but if you’re going out for a night on the town, and you’re in your late 20s, don’t wear a football tee and cargo pants. Instead, wear a nice black shirt on a pair of blue jeans, or tucked into a pair of casual olive green trousers and you’ll make an impression.
