Max Payne
Any film based on a first-person shooter video game should, as a rule of thumb, be full of epic shootouts on a level equal to Sergio Leone or the Wachowski Brothers, and in that regard, Max Payne is an unqualified success. Mark Wahlberg also lives up to the game's pedigree by brooding mightily as the title hero, a big city detective mourning the murder of his wife and child. Revenge is, of course, Payne's ultimate goal, and with the assistance of slinky Russian hitwoman Mila Kunis, he dishes it out in elaborate set pieces overflowing with gymnastic gun play. Viewers seeking just that and nothing more will get their money's worth from John Moore's film adaptation, and most likely be impressed by its fashionably gloomy art direction and cinematography.
Doom
One of the most popular and influential video games ever, the Doom movie wasn’t that big a hit. A coalition of Earth's scientific and military interests have established a research colony called Olduvai on the planet Mars, but one day all communication from the outpost stops and no one can tell what has happened -- though the final messages suggest it's not good. Believing foul play may have overtaken Olduvai's crew, the Rapid Response Tactical Squad, a team of specially trained military personnel, are deployed to investigate the situation and, if necessary, eliminate the invaders. But Sarge (Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock) and Reaper (Karl Urban), leaders of the RRTS team, soon discover the situation is far more grim than they could have imagined.
Mortal Kombat
The 1995 video game-to-film adaptation of Mortal Kombat was not a good movie by traditional standards, and the costumes and effects were very clunky, but it was fun and absolutely captured the attitude of the game. It was more about being a fun martial arts/action spectacle than it was concerned with being a splatterfest and it 100 percent succeeded. The second movie, on the other hand was just not good. Since Annihilation, which came out in 1997, there was a gritty web series called Mortal Kombat: Legacy that was very well received by the internet community. But rumors that it would lead to a new film ultimately fizzled out as nothing was confirmed. Now, star like Michael Jai White and Rhonda Rousey are rumoured to be cast for a new MK movie, along with Liam Neeson.
Tomb Raider
A popular video game comes to the screen with this big-budget adventure starring Angelina Jolie as a buxom heroine recalling equal parts Indiana Jones and James Bond. Jolie is Lara Croft, a proper British aristocrat groomed at schools for the children of the elite. Croft leads a double life, however, as an acquirer of lost antiquities through questionable means, highly trained in combat skills with the help of a robotic opponent called Simon. Lara travels to some exotic locales in search of the artifact, including a foray into a decrepit Asian temple guarded by lethal stone apes and other creatures that spring to life. Those movies were good, but the new Lara Croft is Alicia Vikander. How droolworthy is that?
Resident Evil
Probably one of the most popular game-to-film transitions, the Resident Evil series will soon have its sixth film. It started off very close to the video game. In 2002, an underground Umbrella facility underneath Raccoon City, "The Hive", experiences a viral outbreak after the T-Virus is intentionally released during a theft. The facility's A.I., the "Red Queen", attempts to stop the outbreak from spreading outside by killing the research staff. Later that day, an Umbrella special forces unit breaks into the facility's only entrance, a mansion in the mountains, to investigate the situation in The Hive. They bring with them three people they find - Alice Abernathy, the lab's security officer; Spence Parks, her husband and co-worker, and Matt Addison, a police officer investigating the area. Both Alice and Spence seem to have amnesia and have no knowledge of who they really are and the situation at hand. The movie ended where the game began. Since then, Alice has gone on a series of adventures, and though some of the movies were not all that great, we are not complaining.
