The GIM fraternity has always been committed to reducing its carbon footprint and is committed to building a greener campus by implementing projects which can be monitored and measured periodically. “We at GIM, are able to save close to one million litres of water every year by undertaking these measures”, says Dr Ajit Parulekar, director of Goa Institute of Management.
As part of that initiative GIM is organising a day long sustainability hackathon with the objective of generating ideas on projects which can lead to a sustainable campus. The event is open to all GIM students and will be focused on solutions to water conservation and waste management within the 50-acre campus. Cash prizes will be awarded to the first three teams whose ideas are judged as the most innovative and cost effective.
The keynote speaker for the event, Perses Billimoria, is an independent environmental services professional and the founder and CEO of Earthsoul India Pvt Ltd.
Workshop facilitators, Kavita Patil from The Energy and Resource Institute (TERI) and Siddhant Desai from Goa Waste Management Corporation will be providing the expertise and will be advising the students in the process.
Over the last few years, the Institute has implemented several initiatives which have been focused on conserving energy, reducing water consumption and effective disposable of waste. These initiatives included solar panels for heating water, waterless urinals and rain water harvesting
A hackathon is typically a time-bound competitive event where participants collaborate to build proofs of concept and minimum viable products/roadmaps for a specific pre-defined problem or to innovate. The institute aims to bring about new innovative strategies to be implemented in the years to come. Winning teams will receive cash prize of Rs 25000, Rs 15000, Rs 10000 respectively.
