Akeru Barros Pereira, a Japanese artist will be exhibiting her works based on Indo - Portuguese Goan houses from March 22 to April 1 at Carpe Diem, Majorda. The exhibition of paintings titled Casas Goesas will be opened on March 22 at the hands of Arch. Gerard da Cunha.
Akeru Barros Pereira currently lives and teaches in Japan. A writer, teacher and artist by profession, Akeru’s ties to Goa are manyfold. Her love for painting Goan houses began 30 years ago by sketching her husband’s ancestral house in South Goa. But Goa soon became her muse which led her on her journey of capturing the Indo-Portuguese architecture through her unique style of using Chinese ink, watercolour and colour pencils on Japanese paper.
Akeru’s artwork has since been exhibited a few times and has also been published in the book The Indo - Portuguese House by Gerard da Cunha.
“My paintings are not photographs. The houses, famous or not, magnificent or cosy, tell me their stories,and I paint them. I paint their stories, not a realistic view of the houses, and sometimes broken windows and doors are painted unbroken,” she says.
