As India marks National Sports Day, Goa may have much to celebrate. Still, ambitions across multiple disciplines can never be limited, and the challenges are huge if they are to be achieved. In the six decades since Liberation, Goa has built a sporting identity that extends far beyond its size. Whether it's the football fields in every village or medals and accolades at the national and international stage in chess, badminton, squash and sailing, indeed Goa has consistently punched much above its weight.
FOOTBALL’S ENDURING LEGACY
Football remains the State's defining sport. It was declared Goa's official State sport in 2012 and continues to enjoy unmatched popularity. There are 274 football clubs, over 11,000 registered players, nearly 600 coaches and more than 300 referees.
Goan clubs have also left an indelible mark on Indian football. Dempo SC, Salgaocar SC and Churchill Brothers won a combined 11 I-League titles. FC Goa has now emerged as one of the most successful clubs in Indian Super League history and became the first ISL club to qualify for the AFC Champions League Elite.
Goa has also won the Santosh Trophy five times and produced more than 75 India internationals.
However, concerns persist with the standard of football having declined in recent years, with representation in the national team having dipped sharply and success at the Santosh Trophy elusive.
Goa last lifted the trophy in 2009, though it finished runner-up in 2017 and 2024.
"There was a time when four or five Goans regularly featured in the Indian team. Nearly 100 Goan players were playing for clubs across India. Today, only around 20 to 30 are in the ISL or I-League," says Goa Football Association president Caitano Fernandes.
CRICKET’S UNFINISHED JOURNEY
Cricket presents a similar picture. Goa has played Ranji Trophy cricket for four decades but is yet to reach the knockout stage. Nearly 200 cricketers have represented the State in the Ranji Trophy, yet none has gone on to play for India.
Also, only a handful, including Swapnil Asnodkar, Shadab Jakati and Suyash Prabhudesai, have featured prominently in the IPL.
Former Goa Cricket Association president Vipul Phadke believes grassroots development remains the key challenge.
"We have failed to consistently identify and nurture talent at the under-14 and under-16 levels. Players need greater hunger and ambition. The goal should not stop at playing Ranji Trophy cricket. They should aspire to play for India," he says.
CHAMPS ACROSS DISCIPLINES
Despite these shortcomings, individual excellence continues to shine.
Women's cricket has produced international star Shikha Pandey, while Purvaja Verlekar recently earned selection to the India 'A' women's squad. Young cricketer Venkata Chigurupati has also secured places in India's U-19 teams.
Chess has emerged as one of Goa's biggest success stories. The State has produced three Grandmasters, a Woman Grandmaster, five International Masters and a Woman International Master.
"Goa's strong educational and developmental indicators have contributed to the rise of quality chess players," says Goa Chess Association secretary Ashesh Keni.
Badminton has also delivered national-level success. Tanisha Crasto has been a regular member of the Indian team since 2021 and represented India at the Paris Olympics. Along with international windsurfer Katya Coelho, she has been selected for the upcoming Asian Games. Young shuttler Aarush Pawaskar is also making his presence felt internationally.
THE NEXT GENERATION
Swimming also remains one of Goa's most reliable medal-winning disciplines. A new generation led by Purvi Naik, Vihaan Pednekar, Aahil Sheikh, Aarohi Borde, Pooja Rawool and Saksham Naik continues to excel at national competitions.
Goa has also produced champions in squash, modern pentathlon, table tennis and basketball. Squash player Yash Fadte recently won an international title in Spain and has set his sights on the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Akanksha Salunkhe has won multiple National Games gold medals, while Babu Gaonkar has excelled in modern pentathlon. Table tennis player Chandan Caro and basketball player Jeshua dos Remedios Pinto have also broken new ground.
Goa a global stage for major events
The State's ability to host major events has strengthened significantly. Over the past decade, Goa has successfully organised the National Games, FIFA U-17 World Cups, FIDE Chess World Cup, AFC competitions, international beach volleyball events, Ironman 70.3 Goa and several professional leagues.
However, sports administrators believe infrastructure alone is not enough.
"We have fairly good facilities, but the real gap is coaching. Some Olympic disciplines do not even have a single dedicated coach. Without quality coaches, athletes cannot reach the highest level," says former Goa Olympic Association secretary Gurudatta Bhakta.
Meanwhile, the demand for a dedicated Centre of Excellence is also growing.
Goa Olympic Association (GOA) secretary Sandeep Heble argues that a residential high-performance academy could nurture elite talent across multiple disciplines, particularly martial arts, where Goa has traditionally performed well.
The State government has indicated plans to establish a National Centre of Excellence and recruit coaches in disciplines facing shortages.
Goa's sporting journey is already remarkable. The challenge, however, is to now convert potential into sustained excellence. The talent and infrastructure exist, but producing a larger pool of athletes capable of succeeding on the national and international stage remains a big challenge for the administrators to cope with.
