The Goa University Western Music Chair will receive this week a visit from world-renowned composer Martin Palmeri, one of the most outstanding figures of the European choral music scene and resident composer 2018 for the DCINY in the incomparable Carnegie Hall-New York. In addition to visiting the Goa University, Maestro Palmeri will offer a concert at the NCPA (National Centre for Performing Arts), Mumbai with the GU Choir and the SOI-Symphonic Orchestra of India on November 13 which will be an incredible moment in the history of Goa University (GU) as it is for the first time that an Indian university choir will offer such a joint concert with the SOI-Symphonic Orchestra of India (the only professional orchestra in the country) at the headquarters of the Orchestra, and central stage for Western Music in India.
The fact of being able to count on the visit of music maestro Martin Palmeri is an immense honour for this young Chair of Western Music.The Argentina born renowned composer, Martin Palmeri, has stood out for fusing tango like sacred music and has created works, operas, masses and cantatas that are already part of the musical corpus of classical music of the West, such as his famous work MISATANGO, and have been performed in more than 20 countries. Palmeri - who was one of the first teachers of Visiting Professor and conductor of the GU Choir, Dr Santiago Lusardi Girelli - will visit the campus of the Goa University to offer a choral workshop and a conference with Girelli about his work in the style of tango.
The GU Choir was founded in August 2013 under the baton of Dr Santiago Lusardi Girelli, visiting research professor under the Western Music Chair of the Goa University. Currently he holds the ‘Anthony Gonsalves Chair’ as visiting professor at the Goa University where he works as lecturing professor, composer and conductor of the GU Choir. Since its creation, the Choir has offered multiple programmes, concerts and workshops across Goa and India. During the last five years, it offered 30 plus concerts across India and hosted 80 plus international artists and world-class soloists.
The GU Choir has also collaborated with renowned artistes from all the world: India, Africa, Asia, Europe and America, among them: Cappella della Luce Ensemble (Spain), Rakesh Chaurasia (India), the Seville Chamber Choir (Spain), St Ephraim Choir (Hungary), RocÃo de Frutos, Leo Rossi and Vandalia Ensemble (Spain), Agshavali Male Choir (Georgia), Canto Sospesso (Italy), Vasco Negreiros and the National Orchestra Quartet (Portugal), among many others. Nowadays it has started the recording of its second album production with original contemporary choral music.
Having worked as conductor, composer and lecturer in more than 20 countries in Europe, South America, Africa and Asia, the GU Choir conductor Dr Santiago Lusardi Girelli, recalls beginning his studies in music and philosophy since he was five. A keen musicologist, he did several researches on Hinduism, Christian and Buddhist phenomenology relating theology, arts and music, and published his PhD thesis on Hinduism and Buddhist Phenomenology and Rituality applied to the creation and interpretation of Western music. He studied his degrees in Orchestral Conductor, Choir Conduction, Theology, and Masters in Conduction. He is the creator and Artistic Director of the Ketevan World Sacred Music Festival, a project of musical and artistic coexistence where the language of music becomes a bridge to connect and foster dialogue among cultures (based at the UNESCO Heritage city of Old Goa).
