Sporting Club of Davorlim edged Nuvem Sports Club 1-0 to emerge champions of Sao Jose de Areal Panchayat Cup inter village football tournament, organised by Sao Jose de Areal Sports Club, at Padribhat ground, Sao
Jose de Areal.
In an absorbing summit clash, the teams played some attacking football and the Davorlim team had a chance to go ahead early in the fourth minute but Mable Miranda muffed a sitter as he shot wide with only the rival goalkeeper to beat to the dismay of Davorlim supporters. Minutes later, Nuvem had a chance to surge ahead but Richard Colaco’s long ranger sailed over the crossbar.
After a goalless first half, Sporting Club of Davorlim turned to an aggressive approach and made many forays in the opposition box. They were finally rewarded when striker Agnelo Colaco tapped the ball home off a Paxton Gomes assist in the 50th minute. Nuvem did their bit to score an equaliser but failed to get past the rival rearguard.
Sporting Club of Davorlim were awarded a cash prize of Rs 40,000, while Nuvem Sports Club got the runners-up award of Rs Rs 30,000. Cuncolim MLA Clafacio Dias was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of Fr Richard Pinheiro, parish priest of St Joseph church, Sao Jose de Area, Fr Socoro Rebello, assistant parish priest of St Joseph church, Moreno Rebello, ZP member, Curtorim constituency, Arun Endro, PSI, Quepem Police station, and Joaquim MD Silva, South Goa GFA referee officer.
