You made your acting debut in Kachaa Limboo which incidentally was part of the recent International Film Festival of India 2017 here in Goa. What made you choose this film and do you intend to do more films in the future?
I had actually gone for the film to sing but the director asked me if I was willing to act. Acting is not something I like doing but he managed to convince me. Also, I play myself in the film so it was all in good fun and I didn't take it too seriously. But it is singing that I am naturally gifted in and what I love doing. Everybody wants to get on the big screen and act but somehow I have never been attracted to it. If I was given a chance to be on camera I wouldn't know what to do but give me a stage and a mike and I know what to do.
Coming from a musical family, you've been fortunate to see noted singers recording in the studio as a child. Do share some memorable experiences.
I've seen quite a few singers like Kumar Sanu, Sonu Nigam and Udit Narayan record. In one session I got to see Sonu Nigam singing and he was soo good technically that he finished recording in half an hour! That just blew me away. I knew then that singing was something that I wanted to do. Till date I am a big fan of Sonu Nigam and getting to work with him recently for Goggles for Mubarakan was a dream come true.
You've stated time and again that you want to make your music global. How do you plan to go about this?
I am working on a plan and it will require a lot of hardwork. I like singing in English. Perhaps I will go abroad and work on an EP.
How do you choose the songs that you want to work on?
Generally I do a song based on my gut feeling and what touches my heart. Also, for instance, if I have been doing 4-5 song at a stretch in one genre, I might choose something else just to break the monotony. Sometimes, I also have to consider the reach the song will have, although that is secondary.
You were a finalist at the reality show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L'il Champs, when you were younger. Your advice for others who want to participate in these shows.
Reality shows can give you a platform and a following but it does not mean that you will make it big after that if you win. It requires a lot of hardwork and a sprinkling of good luck. Also it is all about the right timing.
You are known for your great voice and killer looks. But who is Armaan when he is away from the limelight.
Growing up, my father has always told me that there should be a clear distinction between who you are when in public and when you are away. The two are very similar but while it may appear from my social media accounts and travelling pictures that I am pretty outgoing in truth I am very reserved and a family person. I've never actually had friends. With all the work and events, I have never had time to form connections and make friends. I didn't get the normal college life. And sometimes I miss that. But certain sacrifices have to be made for who you want to be.
There was quite a buzz after your comments about Sonakshi Sinha and the Bieber concert in Mumbai a few months ago.
What was said came from the heart and many people in the industry agreed with what I had to say. I have said all I had to say on that and realised that it's not good to be vocal.
After your stint in Baaghi, you are once again working on the sequel. Any other interesting projects coming up?
I am pretty excited about my second collaboration with the Baaghi team. I will also be singing in a few other big films. I am also planning to release a few singles and you will see me in the music videos for these. That's about all the acting you will get from me.
