In August 2016, news surfaced that Yahoo was hacked in 2014 and user details for over 500 million accounts were stolen. This is big news, especially at a time when Yahoo is being bought over by Verizon after the internet company has been floundering in deep waters.
Irrespective of whether Yahoo recovers from this massive breach, it’s pertinent to note that nothing is probably ever safe online. Only a handful of internet companies, the biggies “ Google, Facebook, Apple, etc, haven’t yet been hacked. There were attempts, but they weren’t successful, unless you count the iCloud fiasco a few years ago. Easy passwords and poor security are just two of the biggest reasons why this happens. Companies spend millions on security but hackers can and will get in, most of the time.
Databases have backdoors and covert entry points. That’s a given. The more we are connected, the more we are susceptible to hacks and this is something we have to come to terms with. We will always use the internet more and more as time goes by. Reading up on how to protect our online data better is the only solution, because let’s face it, hackers will keep on trying.
