For those who think Carnival is all about liberal consumption of food, alcohol and mindless frolic, here’s an aspect of the People’s Carnival at Samba Square, which may force you to look at the spirit of the event in a positively different light.
The Samba Square event organized in the heart of the city at the Jardin Garcia de Orta, a popular well-restored city park, which sees several thousand visitors every year, will have a special Raintree kids zone, where the focus will be to ensure that children get their share of the carnival fun.
The children’s zone has been organized collectively by the Panaji-based Nirmala Institute of Education and Bookworm, who have planned a host of activities for children of all age groups. Activities held between 4pm and 9pm include fun and creative tasks like mask making, face painting, clay art, crafts from recycled matter and more.
The Raintree Kids Zone at the Samba Square has also been holding workshops every evening at 4.30 pm for kids. These include rhythm and drum sessions, creating kitchen gardens, art from e-waste and more. Post 6pm, the Nirmala Institute of Education has organized wildlife awareness programmes with live snake demonstrations.
Bookworm will also be creating a book centre at the Samba Square at Jardin Garcia de Orta where children of all ages can come and enjoy reading books of their choice. Children with visibility disabilities can also avail of a collection of Braille books and special tactile books created especially for children with special needs, in order to ensure that all children can equally assess reading material.
