The 5-day competition is an annual event between law colleges worldwide and was organised by Vis East Moot Foundation.
The participants from VMSCL were Riza Rodrigues, Smriti Naik and John James Samuel. Riza Rodrigues also secured the first place for Toscar- best client award and Smriti Naik bagged the second best counsel award.
The Young International Mediation Competition (YIMC) is an annual competition of teams representing law schools throughout the world.
YIMC is intended to create and foster an environment for students to learn and develop skills in mediation and how to use them both as counsel and as a mediator.
YIMC is a multi-faceted educational program including both instructions and a competition through which students can demonstrate their mastery of the various skills used in mediation.
The competition consists of three tiers. First, a training course of two days. Second, the Counsel competition (four days) And Third, the mediator competition (three days). Each team participates in all three tiers and competes for both of the awards.
In all sessions, students take turns being evaluated, and playing the roles of the disputing parties.
The problem in the Third YIMC involved a dispute arising out of an international sale of goods, subject to the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG). The parties had agreed to mediation to be held under the HKIAC Mediation Rules (2015).
For the Mediation Sessions, there were totally four rounds.
For the General Rounds, each team was to compete as Applicant and Respondent and Mediator. The Vis East Moot Foundation assigned the teams and mediators to their sessions and decided their role as applicant and respondent.
For the first round, the team faced Vivekananda Institute of Professional Studies, wherein they were respondents.
For the second round, they faced Transnational Law and Business University, Korea, wherein they were applicants.
After the General Rounds, the scores of each team for its oral presentation in the first two sessions were totaled. The winners would then compete in the first elimination round held, the next day.
For the third round they faced Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia, wherein they were applicants.
For the fourth round they faced De La Salle University- College of Law, Philliphines, wherein they were respondents.
The four winners of the First Elimination Rounds then met in the Semi Finals held the next day.
For the fifth round they faced Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia, wherein they were respondents.
The decision was unanimous and they reached the finals. For the finals, VMSCL faced West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences, India.
This is not the first time VMSCL has achieved such honours and the college has successfully sent its students team along with faculty to take part in premier competitions that see participation of top law colleges from across the world and has been on par with the top law colleges in India it terms of how it has fared at these international competitions.
