Music is all about expressing the feelings that come from the depth of our souls, and to tell our stories so that they touch the heart of the audience. This is the vision of Mumbai-based alternative soul and R&B band ‘My Kind of Blue’. Formed in 2016, the band is touring Goa for the second time, and will be performing at House no. 248 in Sangolda on January 29.
“The band is named My Kind of Blue because we wanted to show an emphasis on emotion, and also the colour blue, and the emotions that it invokes in you,” says lead singer Brecilla D’Souza, underlining that the colour blue denotes intense feeling of emotions. “Our music comes from the depth of emotions that we feel. They are life experiences that have a personal touch. We try to celebrate sadness in the songs that we write,” he added. The band believes that the depth of its music will touch the soul of the listener, making them relate to the music-giving them the feeling that it’s their kind of blue, informs D’Souza, elaborating on the band’s name.
Speaking on the origins of the band, she highlights that it was a result of positive feedback and suggestions from the audience. “Actually, my best friend and I were performing in competitions, and later got the opportunity to perform on a bigger stage. Then, we called some more musicians to collaborate. During this time, some of the audience said that there was good chemistry between us, and we should consider making this a long-term thing,” the lead vocalist of the band reckons that this is perhaps the one of the best feedbacks the band has received for its music.
While the band’s songs are a translation of deeply felt emotions, they are more than just songs, and have an element of storytelling. This is what makes the band unique, says D Souza. “Our music is based on a storyline. First we have a story, and based on the story, we then put down the music, based on what emotion the story invokes,” she informs. “You can’t say that we’re only R&B band. It’s a mix of a lot of genres,” she added. In line with this philosophy, the band has recently released three original songs. The first of these, is titled ‘When you come home’, the tale of a girl whose father works abroad, and the girl wonders why her father isn’t coming home. The second track, titled ‘colours’ is about what a young person goes through when they are stuck in routine life and quit their job to get out of the comfort zone.
Even as the band cites influences such as Janis Joplin, Hiatus Kaiyote, Ella Fitzgerald and Hozier, its music remains rooted in the culture and reality of India, says D’Souza. “The fact that we belong to this soil is very much shown in our music. We sing of the elegance and the reality of India. One of the tracks that we just released, called Oh kind sir, is about the plight of street children in India and how we should be kind to them.” no matter what influences you have, they reflect through your story. But the story that you tell is always of your own, adds the MKOB lead vocalist.
