Jeb Bush is the son of a president of the United States and the brother of a two term president as well. He’s a staunch Republican, as right wing as they come. So when he stands up and says enough is enough, he makes one listen. Bush recanted his support for Donald Trump over the weekend after a grainy video recording had the voice of Trump saying very lewd things about women. Bush is not the only Republican to go public about withdrawing support for the current presidential candidate.
This leaves Trump in very hot soup. There’s a month to go before the polls and in all likelihood, Hillary Clinton’s road to the White House has just been cleared of almost all obstacles. It would take a miracle for Trump to come back from this one. But why should he?
The video recording wasn’t very clear but what was clear was who was doing the talking. Trump’s unmistakable drawl was evident, very much so when he stated that he liked to grope women. Those lewd comments have shocked the nation and it’s unlikely that he will get the female vote, for the most part. The Trump train has probably been derailed very badly.
For almost two years now, most people have put up with Donald Trump, not expecting him to get past the conventions where they elect their nominees for the presidential election. He made statements about turning Muslims away from America. People raised an eyebrow. Later, he mocked the mother of a fallen soldier, also a Muslim. Many Republicans were incensed, but this was their nominee, so they stood by him. Many did so reluctantly. He called Rosie O’Donnel, popular show host, a “fat slob” and, in an interview with Howard Stern, said that it was “check out time” when women turned 35.
For years now, Trump has been at the centre of controversy, most of them to do with sexual laden comments by the billionaire. He has been accused of rape by his ex-wife Ivana, only to have her recant those statements later. He has made awkward statements about his daughter voluptuousness and said so many other things about women that it’s difficult to just select some of the worse ones.
Hillary Clinton may be a lot of things, but right now, people are looking at her as the savior, the one to destroy any notion that a man like Donald Trump could ever be president. Bruce Springsteen, the common man’s troubadour, said of the man a few weeks ago “I don’t think he’s going to win, but even him running is a great embarrassment if you’re an American.” It doesn’t look like America wants to be embarrassed anymore.
