So Shirley Maclaine has been on the big screen for a while now and can teach many an actress a thing or three about movies, but lately her roles have been in the ‘supporting’ section of the cast and not too many where she takes centre stage. But obviously, she’s in the twilight of her life. However, this lady packs quite a punch as an actress and with her latest movie, The Last Word, she takes the limelight and focusses it on herself, with good measure.
The story goes like this, elderly lady, almost near death or so it seems, is extremely controlling and ridiculously sarcastic, seeks out an obituary writer from the local paper to write her obituary. She’s so controlling that she wants to ensure that even after her death things happen the way she wants them to. Reminded one of us of an ex-girlfriend. So anyway, we meet the writer (Amanda Seyfried) who embarks on an interesting journey to find someone to say something nice about Harriet, the elderly lady. When she finds out that there’s only hate and not love for herself out there, Harriet decides to leave a legacy behind by finding a young human being and turning said human being into a peach of a person.
