Well known installation artist Subodh Kerkar, whose body of work has often spoken about Goa and the multiple layers of the region’s history, will deliver a couple of interesting talks on art at the Goa University in Bambolim near Panaji.
While the first talk is ‘What is Art’, the second, and certainly the more layered one is titled ‘Histories of Goa through Contemporary Art’ organised by the University Grants Commission, a statutory body which functions under the aegis of the Union ministry for Human Resource Development.
The venue for the both the talks is the Human Resource Development Centre, Goa University, which is located just on the outskirts of the state capital, from 10 am to 1:15 pm today (March 16).
Subodh Kerkar gave up his medical profession to pursue his passion, visual art. For the past 20 years, he has experimented with different media creating a niche for himself, especially in the field of land art and conceptual art. Subodh specializes in creating works using natural materials like shells, bamboo, stones and pebbles. He has also worked with plants. Some of the large and notable projects which he has handled include half a kilometer of installations at Miramar Beach, Goa, during the inaugural edition of the International Film Festival of India in 2004. Recently Subodh created one kilometer long work titled ‘Unfolding of a Dream’ which incorporated 600 Tibetan prayer flags.
He lives and works in Goa, India and is the Founder of the Kerkar Art Complex and Museum of Goa (MOG) at Pilerne.
