On this day in 1847, written by Charlotte Bronte under the pseudonym Currer Bell is published. The book, about the struggles of an orphan girl who grows up to become a governess, was an immediate popular success thanks to its elements of social criticism, strong sense of morality, the novel's exploration of classism, sexuality, religion, and proto-feminism and the individualistic character of Jane.
In 2011, director Cary Joji Fukunag aadapted Bronte's novel into film. The production quality is top notch, with gorgeous cinematography, affecting light work and music that serve the story well.
