Many visitors come to Goa with a “live it up for a few days” mindset. Easy access to party culture, alcohol, drugs and self-drive rental vehicles can encourage risky behaviour, especially where civic sense is weak and law enforcement appears ineffective. The Sirlim case raises serious questions. The 19-year-old accused allegedly broke multiple traffic rules. Such incidents may be influenced by a perception that offenders often secure quick bail and face limited consequences. Self-drive rental agencies frequently hand over powerful vehicles without adequate checks or safety briefings, while traffic monitoring remains inadequate. Unless enforcement is strengthened and loopholes addressed, Goa risks more avoidable tragedies, with innocent lives paying the price.
