Nursing college announcement an appeasement ploy?

GUILHERME ALMEIDA | DECEMBER 30, 2023, 01:37 AM IST

Does Health Minister Vishwajitbab Rane’s latest announcement that the vacant top two floors of the South Goa district hospital will now house the proposed nursing college imply that the controversial plan to set up a private medical college in the hospital building is finally scrapped? Or, is this announcement part of a series of flip-flops, wherein the Health Minister has been shifting his stance from a nursing college to a private medical college over the last five years? Indeed, questions did the rounds in the district hospital corridors whether Vishwajitbab has finally shelved the private medical college from coming up in the district hospital, or, whether it is just a move not to antagonise people from South Goa, more so with the 2024 Lok Sabha polls less than six months away. Any questions?

Tagore’s exit after criticism of Cong affairs raises questions
It is a sheer coincidence that when outgoing Congress observer Manickam Tagore left the State after an interactive session with party leaders, he had expressed his unhappiness over the functioning of the party, going to the extent of telling the media that he would submit a detailed report to the High Command.

Tagore’s statement indeed triggered speculations that the days of the present GPCC leadership may be numbered. What has gone wrong for Tagore in the AICC headquarters is a question doing the rounds in GPCC circles and outside when his blue-eyed boys in the State congress were expecting a change in the PCC leadership.

In a complete turn of events, Tagore is no more in charge of the Goa Congress. Any takers?

Girish gung-ho about LS ticket despite NE responsibility
Ex-Goa Pradesh Congress Committee chief Girishbab Chodankar seemed to have not lost hopes of getting the prized Congress ticket for the South Goa Lok Sabha seat in 2024. When political observers were quick to rule out Girishbab’s candidature for the South Goa seat after his appointment as Congress in-charge of the four north-eastern states of Tripura, Manipur, Sikkim and Nagaland, Girishbab reportedly told his close aides that the game is not over yet.

How would Girishbab tone up the party in the four north-eastern states where as many as half a dozen Lok Sabha seats are at stake and also gear up for the South Goa Lok Sabha seat remains a million-dollar question. Wait and watch.

Sardinha makes strong case as Cong Lok Sabha race heats up
Congress leadership may find itself in a piquant situation over the South Goa Lok Sabha seat. For, sitting MP Francisbab Sardinha has again expressed his wish to contest the Lok Sabha polls if given a ticket by the party. While ex-GPCC chief Girishbab Chodankar has kicked off his campaign for the Lok Sabha election, and not to forget two other ticket contenders, Elvisbab Gomes and Capt Viriatbab Fernandes in the fray, sources say the party high command will have to find a genuine reason for denying the ticket to Sardinhbab, more so when he has won the Lok Sabha polls on all four occasions. Any takers?

Review after market fire triggers query over ragpicker death probe
When Congress-turned-BJP Margao MLA Diggu came rushing to the New Market after Tuesday’s raging fire, he announced that a meeting of officials would take place in a day to take stock of the situation. Scribes covering the fire incident were quick to recall that when a ragpicker was electrocuted to death in the city a couple of months ago, Diggu had come rushing to the spot to order an inquiry into the electrocution incident. Will anyone shed light on whether any probe had taken place into the ragpicker’s death in the first place, if any, and its findings? Indeed, time for introspection.
