Speculation rife over cabinet rejig post-Assembly session

GUILHERME ALMEIDA | AUGUST 04, 2024, 12:41 AM IST

With just three days left for curtains to come down on the ongoing Assembly session, questions over cabinet reshuffle and induction of ruling MLAs in the Pramodbab Sawant government have started doing the rounds in political circles during the weekend. A cabinet reshuffle was the talking point in political circles in the run up to the Assembly session, before the speculations were nipped in the bud by ruling party leaders. With the Assembly session set to conclude on Wednesday, the same old question of cabinet reshuffle post-Assembly session did the rounds in political circles during the weekend. Wait and watch.

Curiosity grows over Opposition attendance at Speaker’s dinner

Guess how many Opposition MLAs joined the customary dinner hosted by Speaker Rameshbab Tawadkar at a starred hotel on Friday, is a question doing the rounds in political circles. Sources said the Speaker’s customary dinner is normally held on the last day of the Assembly session. The dinner get-together, however, was reportedly preponed this time with the auspicious month of Shrawan starting from Monday. Last time round, Goa Forward chief Vijaibab Sardesai had accepted the Speaker’s invite. This time too, Vijaibab is believed to have made his presence felt at the Speaker’s customary dinner on Friday. Wait and watch whether any other Opposition MLA were present at the dinner.

Cong leadership debate heats up amid calls for change

Against the backdrop of rumours that a group of Congressmen have upped the ante for a change in party leadership, partymen aligned to the Yuri-Amit camp have come out with a counter to the campaign – is there any valid ground for the party leadership to effect a change in leadership when the party has retained the South Goa seat in the recently held Lok Sabha election? The Amit-Yuri-Altone camp wondered whether there’s any ground to seek leadership change after the resounding victory of Captain Viriatbab Fernandes in South Goa. The game of one-upmanship seemed to have started in right earnest in the Congress camp in the run up to the 2027 Assembly polls.

Political rivalry spurs unexpected aid for Home Guard’s collapsed house

Political rivalry, many say, hampers development. It may, however, also come as a blessing in disguise in certain cases. A case in point is the retired Home Guard Vimalbai Shirodkar’s house that collapsed during the heavy rains last month. Both the Congress and the BJP jostled in their bid to reach out to Vimalbai in the wake of the tragedy. The Congress led by MP Viriato and Congress leader Savio Coutinho initiated a drive to raise funds to rebuild Vimalbai’s house. Not one to take things lying down, more so in his fiefdom, Cong-turned-BJP Margao MLA got the entire administration literally to the doorsteps of Vimalbai’s house. That’s not all. Diggu not only got Rs 2 lakh sanctioned from the natural calamity fund to Vimalbai, but has rebuilt the house with the help of a philanthropist. Any questions?

Who will lead South ZP? BJP faces key decision post-Suvarna’s exit

Kaun Banega South Goa Zilla Panchayat chairperson, is a question doing the rounds in BJP circles and outside since the party issued a diktat to incumbent Suvarnabai Tendulkar to quit office. Questions are raised whether Panchayat Minister, Mauvinbab Godinho, who hails from South Goa, will have his close aide preside over the South ZP office. Though he has been holding the Panchayat portfolio for long now, Mauvinbab somehow could not get his nominee to head the South ZP body. Will Suvarnabai Tendulkar’s exit from the post paving way for the entry of Sancoale ZP member Anitabai Thorat to the hot seat. Wait and watch.
