The Shack King of Calangute

Souza Lobo has helped the local economy and is now a brand that generates goodwill and large profits for its owners

The Shack King of Calangute

The beach at Calangute may play host to an increasinglydiverse set of colours but somethings thankfully never change.

On the edge of the beach lay a classic institution and areminder of a time gone by. Souza Lobo, the restaurant and bar has been aconstant on the beach since 1932. It has been an observer of the changingtimes.

Today, the third generation is in charge and the institutionis running on all cylinders. John Lobo, the grandson of the founder is presentat his spot everyday working the long hours required in this industry. Askedwhat changes he had seen since he took over in 1994 he said, “Earlier we usedto close during the monsoons, which does not happen now. In the 80’s, theforeign tourist was the focus of our attention. Today it is the domestictourist who comes in large numbers ensuring that we are open throughout theyear”.

The area may have seen the rise of more shacks resulting ina boom for the local economy but tardy governance, in his words, is a matter ofconcern. He said, “the government did not do anything for a while but now theroad is being done up and it is certainly a great help”.

The allure of the place he felt was due to the authenticGoan recipes that were available. The prawn curry rice with the rechaedo masalawas a specialty. In addition other favourites like sarpotel, vindaloo ensuredthat people were returning for 30-40 years.

The presence of the same staff he felt also helped. “Myoldest staff has been here for 28 years. This also ensures that the quality ismaintained which is very important. Other outlets come up, do well for a yearand then find it difficult to sustain their performance,” he said.

The presence on private property has also helped therestaurant. Earlier rooms that were rented out were demolished and therestaurant expanded. The music and the simple rustic charm have ensured thatthe business generates approximately Rs 30 lakh per month in sales.

As Goa experiences dramatic changes, one could say with somegratitude that somethings are still the same.
