Alex Albuquerque won in the Standing category while Stany D'Souza claimed the gold in wheelchair category at the first Para Badminton Tournament for the 2022-23 season held at Manohar Parrikar Indoor Stadium Navelim.
The para players competed in two categories, Standing and Wheelchair. Alex Albuquerque and Raju Magdum emerged winner and runner-up in the Standing category. Gopal Naik and Sachin Gad finished joint third.
In Wheelchair category, Stany D'Souza (gold), Moises Rodrigues (silver) and Sayed Mosik Mauli (bronze) finished on the podium. Vishant Nagvekar, Mukesh Chaudhary and Ruki Ahmed emerged as consolation winners. The tournament was organised by the Para Badminton Committee of Goa Badminton Association (GBA).
The GBA will work hand in hand with the Para Badminton Committee and organise regular tournaments and camps, besides practice sessions for para players, the association said in a press release.
"At least three tournaments will be planned from October to December and para players will be prepared to participate in the Para Nationals. Badminton is hugely popular and there is immense interest among para players who we found very keen and enthusiastic during the Para Badminton Tournament which was held recently," stated Sandeep Heble, GBA Secretary.
