Canacona SCC book quarterfinals berth

Canacona Sports and Cultural Club defeated CAC Cansaulim 2-0 to enter the quarterfinals of the Late Afonso Aguiar inter-village football tournament organised by Cuncolim Union at Cuncolim ground, Cuncolim on Thursday.

Both the teams played attacking football. In the 7th minute, Canacona's Savelon Cardozo gave the lead to his team off a pass from Cavin Lobo. In the 9th minute, Lobo's shot went wide. Canacona led 1-0 in first half. In the 40th minute, Cansaulim's Cidroy D'Souza missed an easy opportunity.

In the 49th minute, Canacona doubled their tally through Cavin Lobo, who placed the ball into the far corner of the net. Canacona goalkeeper Earl Fernandes was awarded the Man of the match prize at the hands of Malcom Fernandes, a social worker.

Goa women hold Kerala to progress to finals
Goa are through to the finals after they held Kerala 1-1 in their last league match of the National Masters Women’s Football Festival, at the SVD ground, Raia on Thursday.

In the match played in the morning, Goa lost by a solitary goal against the other finalists Tamil Nadu. Pushpa scored the lone goal of the game. In the match against Kerala, a penalty scored by captain Laura put Goa in front in the first half.

Soona neutralised the lead for Kerala but the draw was enough for Goa to progress to the title clash. In the other matches, Vasanthi’s goal helped Tamil Nadu defeat Maharashtra by a solitary goal. Maharashtra also lost their match against Karnataka 1-0. Nesa scored the goal.

Earlier, Kerala defeated Karnataka to keep their finals hopes alive with a goal scored by Terry. In the morning, the organisers held a medical check-up camp for the participants in collaboration with the South Goa District Hospital and the PHC of Loutolim and Curtorim. There was a talk on nutrition delivered by Jovito Lopes, which was the programme's highlight.
