Goa recorded two victories, winning against Maharashtra and Karnataka in the Vedanta-sponsored National Masters Women’s Football Festival at SVD ground, Raia held as part of the International Women’s Day celebrations.
In the inaugural match, Goa beat Maharashtra 2-0 with Laura Estibeiro and Ritinha Pereira scoring in either half. In the second match of the morning, fancied Kerala women were held to a goalless draw by Tamil Nadu which was full of excitement and high drama. The Tamil Nadu team from the Tamil Nadu Police gave a run for the money to the Kerala women, who look like the top contenders for the title.
Goa in their second match played in the afternoon session against Karnataka women had a good match to offer to all those in attendance with a comfortable 4-1 win. The highlight of Goa's victory was a hat-trick scored by the very dependable Laura Estibeiro. The other goal was scored by Julie while the lone goal for Karnataka was scored by Nesa Kumari. The Kerala-Maharashtra match played in the evening ended in a 0-0 draw.
The event was inaugurated in the morning by Savio Madeira, Head, Coach Education, AIFF, in the presence of several national and international women players from Goa and other States. Melroy Moura from the Vedanta Group, who are the main sponsors of the event, also watched a couple of matches.
