MARGAO
The Staff of Margao Municipal Council edged past Margao Municipal Councillors 3-2 via tiebreaker to win a football exhibition match at SAG Artificial Turf Ground, Fatorda on Saturday. The match was goalless at halftime.
The Staff remained in the ascendancy with the Councillors failing to register a single shot on target in the entire game. The opening half proved to be a cagey affair with neither side able to assert their dominance.
Crossing over, both the teams showed attacking intent and Staff took over the reins. They were well served by former Don Bosco Oratory players. However, their goal attempts were nullified by the Councillors' defenders. Councillors had a few chances but their forwards wasted from close range. With the time running out, the Staff of Margao Municipal Council stepped up but the rival defenders were stubborn at the back.
In the penalty shootout, Pravin, Joaquim and Wilson were on target for the winners while Sebastiao and Conceicao converted for the Councillors.
Earlier, Margao Municipal Councillors beat Margao Press 3-1 while the Staff of Municipal Council beat Staff B 5-4 via tiebreaker. Margao MLA Digambar Kamat was the chief guest and distributed the trophies in the presence of Damodar Shirodkar, Chairperson of Margao Municipal Council and Chief Officer Gaurish Shanvalkar.
Santosh Mirajkar of Margao Press was adjudged as the best defender. He received a cash prize of Rs 1,000 from Kamat.
