MARGAO
United Club of Benaulim edged past Pedda Boys 1-0 to win the Roque Memorial football tournament, organised by New Era Club, at Ximbul Ground, Benaulim on Sunday.
In a match which was mostly dominated by Pedda Boys, the match winner was scored two minutes before the final whistle when United Club of Benaulim striker Pele struck with a right-footer.
Earlier, Pedda Boys were unlucky a couple of times as medio Joburn and Arif Pathan struck the crossbar. United Club of Benaulim were strong in defence with the rearguard comprising of Claudeson Goes and young goalkeeper Velito Silva. The all-important goal came when Pele pounced on a loose ball inside the rival box and he unleashed a right-footer past the goalkeeper.
United Club of Benaulim were awarded a prize of Rs 15,000 and a trophy, while Pedda Boys had to settle for Rs 12,000 and a trophy.
Savio Alemao was the chief guest and gave the prizes, in the presence of Warren Alemao and TAG chairman Menino de Bandar. Sports secretary Rosario proposed a vote of thanks. The function was compered by Anthony Rodrigues.
Individual prizes: Best goalkeeper - Vellio D'Silva, Best defender - Popu of Pedda Boys, Best midfielder - Jozwon of Pedda Boys, Best forward - Francis of United Club of Benaulim, Man of the final - Pele of United Club of Benaulim.
