United Club of Benaulim edged past Guirdolim Club 5“4 in a penalty shootout to book their place in the quarterfinals of the Navelim Villagers Union Trophy Football Tournament, organized by the Navelim Villagers Union and played at the Rosary Church Ground, Navelim, on Monday.
The match ended 1“1 in regulation time, forcing a tiebreaker. Keegan Fernandes gave UC Benaulim the lead in the 31st minute, while Gale D’Costa restored parity for Guirdolim Club in the 56th minute.
UC Benaulim were unlucky on three occasions as their attempts hit the post and went out of play, while Guirdolim missed a golden opportunity to seal the win in the dying moments.
In the ensuing penalty shootout, Osbourne Fernandes, Luis Fernandes, Faizel Bepari, and Roslly Fernandes converted successfully for Benaulim, while Mario Fernandes, Gale D’Costa, and Akram Yadwad found the net for Guirdolim.
Keegan Fernandes of UC Benaulim was adjudged Man of the Match, with the prize presented by Peregrino Pires.
