The Dona Paula centre of the Goa Football Development Council (GFDC) organised an International Women’s Day celebration at Our Lady of the Rosary School, Dona Paula on Monday.
The event was attended by GFDC Chairman Glenn Ticlo, Member Secretary Fransquinha Oliveira, school authorities, and other dignitaries.
Addressing the gathering, Ticlo highlighted the significant strides women are making across various sectors.
“I recently took over as Chairman and there is lots to be done for GFDC. We have 36 centres. With the support of Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant and Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar, I will work to take GFDC to greater heights,” he said.
“Today, women are doing very well in all fields, be it academics, culture, sports, or even in cricket, where women have played well. Wherever they go today, they are treated as equals. Our government should recognise their efforts and give them the required infrastructure at all the centres for both boys and girls, as well as proper coaches,” he further said.
In her address, Member Secretary Fransquinha Oliveira emphasised that GFDC remains committed to creating more opportunities for girls to learn, play, and grow through football.
“Today, we celebrate not just women, but the strength, talent, and determination of young girls who are stepping onto the football field with confidence. It is wonderful to see 33 girls training at this centre, showing that football is truly for everyone. Your dedication, discipline, and passion for the game are inspiring. Each one of you represents the bright future of women’s football in Goa,” she said.
Oliveira encouraged the trainees to continue chasing their dreams. She also lauded the track record of the Dona Paula centre, noting its history of producing state-level players.
“This centre has also been a three-time winner of the GFDC inter-centre tournament and is in the semi-finals again this year. Coaches Leena and Centre Head Carol Gomes have done a commendable job to develop and provide a football pathway to these young girls. I thank all the parents for their constant encouragement and for their support, which is the foundation of every girl’s success,” Oliveira added.
