24 teams to vie for GCL 2016

Goa Champions League 2016 - a cricket extravaganza of its kind organized by Digigoa Solucion Private Limited for school children is set to take place from September 22 -25 at Peddem Indoor Stadium, Mapusa. The cricket event set on the lines of Hong Kong sixes will have school participation across three categories “ U-12, U-14 and U-16. For the inaugural edition, eight schools are participating with teams in each category. Each age group tournament will feature two groups with four teams each which thereon will feature in a knock-out phase. The 5-over matches played with a tennis ball will be a 6-a-side competition with two additional players as reserves.

Divulging on the motto behind organising this event, Arun Kumara, Sales & Marketing, Digigoa Solucion Private Limited told a media briefing: "Kids deserve a lot and Goa is known for its football, but cricket was being left out." He went on to say that this format which lasts only for an hour can have parents coming to the venue to watch the games and also cheer their wards.

Vrushali Parsekar,BNI Mandovi President, who was also present revealed that even Indian cricketer, MS Dhoni started out playing with tennis ball cricket, so also Shikha Pandey, a Goan who plays for the Indian eves team played tennis ball cricket as well.

The participating schools for the inaugural edition include Mother of Mercy, Vasco (Mercy Strikers), Sunshine International, Old Goa (Sunshine Thunder), Regina Mundi, Chicalim(Regina Dragons), Rosary High School, Miramar (Slipdisc Warriors), Don Bosco High School, Panjim (Boscos Blaster), Dr KB Hedgewar School, Bambolim (Hedgewar Battlers), Sharada Mandir, Miramar (Sharada Titans) and Mushtifund High School, Panjim (Mushtifund Chargers). An interesting facet of the tournament would be LED lights on the boundary lines, on the score-board as well and highlights as an added attraction. All matches are scheduled to take place between 10am “ 6pm with the finals slated on September 25. The event is in association with the Sports Authority of Goa.
