AYUSH Minister Shripad Naik, Sports Minister Babu Ajgaonkar, Director of Sports & Youth Affairs, V M Prabhudesai and Geno Pharmaceuticals Managing Director, Dilip Salgaocar presented the trophies and medals to the individual and team champions.
Badminton player Anura Prabhu Desai could not attend the function as she is away in Prague for international challenge tournament. Her parents, Santosh and Archana received the award.
Apart from the sports awards, the Sports Journalists Associatio
n of Goa also recognised the efforts of all-rounder Shikha Pandey and physiotherapist Tracy Fernandes for their remarkable performance in India's journey to the finals of ICC Women's Cricket World Cup in England earlier this year. Since Shikha was away on Indian Air Force duty, her mother, Susheela Pandey received the citation.
The SJAG also presented a special citation, as a token of appreciation for supporting budding talents in the state sports arena, to Dilip Salgaocar, CMD, Geno Pharmaceuticals. Shrinivas Dempo, Dempo Group chairman, was out of the country and missed the felicitation function.
Senior Sports Journalist Manguesh Borkar (Goa Doot) and photo-journalist Ganadeep Sheldekar (The Navhind Times) were also felicitated for their contribution to sports. Ganadeep is now the first recipient of newly-instituted best sports photo-journalist of the season award.
Speaking on the occasion, Dilip Salgaocar, MD, Geno Pharmaceuticals, congratulated the awardees for performing at a high standard, especially the likes of first chess Grand Master from the State, Anurag Mhamal and badminton player Anura Prabhu Desai, who is the first Goan shuttler to win an international medal at the senior level.
Recollecting the inception of the awards around 15 years ago, Salaocar said: "We started the Geno Sports Awards to encourage sportspersons taking up various sports disciplines. That time, Goa was quite a force in football. However, many children were coming up in other sports events. We wanted to motivate them."
These awards, will further motivate the awardees, he added, pledging continued support to the Sports Journalists Association of Goa.

He called upon the youngsters to take benefit of comprehensive sports infrastructure in the state compared to that available 25 years ago.
Sports Minister Babu Ajgaonkar hailed the awardees for bringing glory to Goa and wished the internationals - Anurag, Anura, Maymol Rocky and emerging cricketer Heramb Parab - continue to rise higher in their sports disciplines.
"As a part of the government, I am trying to provide best sports facilities in the state. However, you have every right to correct us when we go wrong," remarked Ajgaonkar, who has been once again reminded by the SJAG of the necessity to revive the Jeevabadada Kerkar award.
While the awards need to be timely, the international sportspersons also need financial support to excel. Without committing a date to revive the Kerkar awards, Ajgaonkar said that he is working towards setting up a fund for supporting international sportspersons.
