Assolda Veterans registered a fluent 2-0 win over Curtorim Veterans to win the 6th Navelim Veterans Cup, organised by Navelim Veterans, at Rosary ground, Navelim on Saturday. Both goals came in the first half.
Assolda Veterans dominated the game right from the word go and broke the deadlock in the 8th minute when Reddy slotted past the rival goalkeeper with a snap shot. Spurred by the lead, Assolda Veterans upped the ante and in the 12th minute, Agnel scored the second goal.
Down 0-2, Curtorim Veterans intensified their attacks and had chance to reduce the margin but Mario Pereira ballooned over from close range in the 14th minute.
Post resumption, Assolda Veterans continued in the same vein but their forwards could not increase the tally. However their defenders managed to keep Curtorim attackers at bay and secured the title with a 2-0 win.
Assolda Veterans were awarded a cash prize of Rs 30,000 and a trophy, while Curtorim Veterans bagged a prize of Rs 25,000 and
a trophy.
Mariano Dias, AFC instructor and former State footballer, was the chief guest and gave away the prizes, in the presence of guests of honour, Fr Americo Rodrigues, Assistant Parish Priest of Rosary Church, Navelim; Climax Lawrence, former international footballer and Avertano Furtado, former Fisheries minister. Special invitees Edwin Cipru Cardozo, ZP Member; Micky Rebello, GFDC coach, Navelim Centre, and Jose Santarita Coelho (Babush), GFA executive member, were also present.

Oldest player - Mahesh Lotlikar (Chinchinim Veterans), Best midfielder - Robert Fernandes (Curtorim Veterans), Best striker - Agnelo (Assolda Veterans), Best goalkeeper - Benny (Assolda Veterans), Best left-footer - Peter Pexito (Assolda Veterans), Best defender - Mario Pereira (Curtorim Veterans), First scorer - Reddy (Assolda Veterans).
