A goal in each session by Francisco Fernandes saw Assonora United register a 3-1 win over Holy Cross,
Arambol in a GFA’s 2nd Division League match played at Poriat Ground here on
Tuesday.
With this win, Assonora United stay in the competition for a play-off spot with 14 points while
Holy Cross, Arambol has just four points and are fighting relegation. Both the teams have a match to play in the ongoing league.
It was Arambol that stunned their opponents in the 20th minute when Stepliton received a pass from Anthony Fernandes and scored with a neat placement to make it 1-0.
Francisco Fernandez, who came on from the bench, scored two quick goals -- the first from a blistering
25- yards and another in the 37th minute in similar fashion to go into the changing room with a 2-1 lead.
On crossing ends, Arambol’s Amit Fernandes sent a clever lob at the goal to find Assonora keeper
Pranal leave his charge and tackle Stephelton outside the penalty-box, promoting referee Deepraj
Sangelkar to give marching orders to the keeper and a direct a free-kick.
As the match progressed, Assonora time and again attacked the rival citadel but failed to score till the closing stage of play.
A 30-yard shot by Francis rebounded off the post while minutes later an unmarked Vishnu Pawar
saw his tap at the goal at the far end of the goal being blocked by Arambol keeper Amit Rane.
Brilliant keeping by Arambol’s Amit saw him bring in excellent saves to stop Francis, Vishnu and Omkar from scoring.
Arambol’s Stephelton Fernandes had all the time in the world to level
terms but saw his lob at an unguarded Assonora goal miss the mark.
While Arambol missed at the other end, Assonora netted in the third goal through Diksha to make it 3-1.
